Morgan Meets her Maker

Morgan Gee and I made a mini-pilgrimage to Brussels last week to meet Thomas Bertrand, the man who made her viola. He was very kind and quite excited to meet the player of an instrument he made so long ago and sent so far away. Thomas welcomed us into his beautiful home workshop and described to us the process of crafting a string instrument by hand. One of the most interesting issues we discussed was wood – Violin makers waste 90 percent of the wood they source for their instruments and rely on species of trees that are now quite scarce. Morgan focused on this issue for her Meet Your Maker presentation, creating a lecture and performance that considered the concepts of Reclamation, of Terrarium, and of Ritual/Music.
